As we approach the holiday season and the end of a tough 2020, we wanted to share a Christmas gift for our readers as we wind the year down. We have covered tips, tricks, and techniques from various public speaking and communication topics throughout the year. From traditional speech scenarios to formal, business settings, we hope that these techniques have been useful for you to try, apply, and master in your day-to-day settings.
For this week’s article, we thought of combining the key public speaking lessons we have learnt from 2020 to give you a quick guide you can re-visit for the new year. The new year provides us with a chance to re-visit the big question: what type of communicator do I want to be for the new year? Well, the team over at the Public Speaking Academy decided to consolidate our favourite public speaking resolutions you can apply as we enter 2021 together!
Aim to Craft Your Signature Message/Story
If 2020 seemed confusing, long, and draining for you, 2021 may represent an opportunity to re-invent yourself as a communicator! The first step is to craft your signature message or story to use as a conversation tool, speech introduction, or a general attention-grabber. You may have encountered a powerful and valuable lesson for 2020 – why not turn it into a learning point for your audience in 2021?
How can you pick out a signature message or story for 2021? There are three aspects you can look out for! First, pick out a defining experience from 2020 to use as an anecdote or conversation-starter. You don’t have to pick a dramatic or perfect story as long as the purpose Is to deliver value to your audience. Second, choose a strong learning point or moral that you can weave into your 2021 presentations. From general introductions to bigger meetings, your future audience members can benefit from a positive learning point! Third, identify a message that drove your 2020 journey – if it was an inspiration to you, the same may be true for your 2021 audience.
Prepare Offline & Online
We believe that the 2021 public speaking stage will require more versatile and flexible communicators. It is no longer just about traditional communication modes (such as a physical stage or large audience sizes). While that may be a returning future (albeit still a distant one), we want to develop as communicators who can effectively navigate various communication platforms.
Beyond just the online and offline platforms, carve out time to think about what your 2021 audience profile is likely to be. For example, if you are in the training industry, 2021 may bring along a more interactive audience profile in 2021, aside from just the current Zoom platform. Your public speaking journey may involve more than just attending public speaking/communication training to remain relevant. Look towards the horizon and pick out the type of communication skills combination you want for your future communicator self!
Find Your Teacher!
Finally, we hope that more people will start to appreciate the value of public speaking/communication skills training. Don’t worry, we are not trying to urge you to sign up for our courses! Instead, the bigger point we are hoping for is that more will take the effort to improve themselves as clear, confident, and competent communicators.
This training does not have to be with us! Instead, use the various learning modes available (both paid and free) to develop your awareness of your public speaking habits. Find a teacher or mentor who can act as a role model for you in this communication skills journey! Public speaking is no longer seen as an unimportant skill that one is ‘born’ with; it requires a precise learning methodology and process to nurture and master.
