The 3 Factors to Make Your Informative Presentation Stand Out – Your Effective Presentation Guide!
A quick Google search on the internet and you find hundreds of articles sharing about bringing your business presentations to the next level. However, most of these guides do not provide you with a precise answer to a specific setting or context. For example, an informative-type presentation needs a focus on your structure and content arrangement. On the other hand, a persuasive-type presentation may require a different priority in your introduction.
Today, we want to focus on informative-type presentations – business presentations to deliver information to the audience members. While business presentations may have overlapping objectives, identifying a dominant objective acts as a compass to guide you and your audience. Informative-type presentations may come across as dull, boring, and routine, but with our three tips below, you can make your informative speech a hallmark of a brilliant business presentation in your organisation.
Let’s dive in!
Tip #1: Create Your Map
We like to think that the information in your presentation is like an undiscovered treasure for your audience. They may have no idea that what you have in store for them is valuable and insightful. Unlike an actual treasure hunt, however, you want to make it easy for your audience members to find the treasure. This includes your main message, your call to action, or your key information you hope to deliver in the context of a presentation.
To create the map, start by identifying the treasure first! Don’t worry; you will not have to pay out of your pocket to buy your audience something. Instead, draft a 2-3 liner informative goal for your audience in response to this prompt: “by the end of my presentation, my audience members will …” Think of this as a learning outcome for your audience, no matter how complex the topic is. Once you have picked out the distant goal, plot the steps to the treasure by mapping out how your audience will navigate the information. Think about the sub-points, explanation, illustrations, or examples that you can use along the way!
Tip #2: Reframe, Simplify, Emphasise
An informative-type business presentation is boring because we choose to make it boring. We may not intend it at the start, but seeing the presentation as a mere ‘formality’ to go through may make you complacent. This usually results in presentations that are lifeless or lacking in energy. Instead, take that extra hour to run through your presentation materials and script and pick out the key elements to reframe, simplify, or emphasise.
First, pick out technical terms or complex concepts that can be reframed into something relevant. For example, instead of a mere statistic (e.g., about 20% of customers complain), change it into a digestible and relatable concept (e.g., every 5 customers we serve, 1 will complain). Second, if you find yourself thinking, “my topic is too technical to simplify“, it is very likely that your audience will find the topic tedious. Take the effort to re-visit your points and simplify them – how would you explain this to a 10-year-old kid? Finally, remember the key information that you need to emphasise along the way. These are points that need to be presented to your audience!
Tip #3: Make it a Two-Way Street
Most presenters see informative type speeches (even for business presentations) as a one-way, passive event. All they need to do is to share the bulk of the information, receive polite applause, and move on with their workday. Turning your informative presentation into a two-way street, however, can engage your audience thoroughly. More importantly, it will contribute to your dominant goal of ensuring your audience retain the learning points from your presentation.
You don’t have to dive right in with a dramatic style or a revamp of your format! Start simple with open-ended questions that allow your audience to set out high-value content such as experiences, stories, or opinions. Build on these responses and continue the discussion, pulling a few members of the audience in. Once you grow more comfortable, start incorporating group elements such as discussion or exploration. You can even incorporate technology tools to help you reach your audience better!
Make Your Information an Inspiration!
We have talked about informative speeches before, but when your business presentation’s goal is primarily to deliver information, it may be an immense challenge to stand out. However, with careful planning for your presentation content and structure, you can ensure that your presentation is inspirationally informative!
