Social Media Presentation – Improving Your Child’s Online Communication

You may think that social media presence or online communication techniques are skills not worth pursuing for your child, at least at a young age. You will be surprised. In our experience, we have observed various young communicators who can wield online communication platforms with ease, creativity and panache. In fact, some of them are mini-experts in using the various technology platforms now available.

To us, this presents a fantastic learning opportunity for our young communicators. Online communication or the ability to communicate engagingly through new or social media is a versatile skill. Beyond short Instagram or Facebook videos, some training or classes have already moved into the online platform and running online masterclasses. The challenge then is to refine, hone and improve your child’s skills in online communication for them to shine on the virtual stage. This also helps to set them up for success in the future!

In today’s article, we will be exploring three simple tips on how you can help guide your child to achieve success in online communication!

Tip #1: Ideation – Use Your Passion

One of the critical challenges of the online platform is to engage and capture your audience attention within a short space of time. Given the wide variety of ready alternatives on the Internet, the video or online stream must be sufficiently entertaining or valuable to draw your audience in. Of course, we are not recommending your child to try out viral challenges (especially those that are unsafe!). Instead, it is important to understand that the ideation process, for an online platform, is not entirely straightforward.

One method of securing interest is to present on a topic of passion. This is a potential activity you can try out with your child – to create a video of their passion or interest and present it online. Imagine doing a demonstration or how-to video on how to prepare their favourite dish or play a fun game! By picking out topics that excite your child, they will not only learn to excite their audience but also discover their own interests.

Tip #2: Planning – Designing a Clear Structure

Once they have an idea in mind, the next step is to plan their ‘show’! The videos that you see online are not done in one take, without preparation or practice. In fact, some of these new/social media platforms utilise storyboarding to craft the overall plan/direction before executing the ideas. While your child need not go to such an extent, it would help to start thinking seriously about how they wish to present their topic.

The two keywords are easy and engaging! The information should be delivered in an easy, digestible form that is quick for the audience to understand and apply. Even if the topic of interest is a complicated or confusing one, your child can experiment with the challenge of creating a relatable and straightforward framework for the content they are delivering. At the same time, they will have to layer their delivery with engaging elements, such as stories, anecdotes or interactive elements!

Tip #3: Style – Be Confident

Finally, no communication technique or tips will be complete without covering body language skills as well. Even for online communication or presentation, your body language techniques are more important. Without a live audience, your child may also find it a safer environment to practise and play around with the various body language elements. For example, they may want to adopt open and welcoming hand gestures to draw their audience in and keep them engaged. Ultimately, your child can still develop as a confident communicator, even via an online platform!

Final Thought:

Be that Online Star!

The arrival of the new technology and platforms, together with the current COVID-19 situation, means that more are turning towards the virtual stage. The same will apply for your child as well as their lessons or even group meetings move online. Starting young is a fantastic way to nurture the relevant skillset and develop the positive habits required.

We look forward to catching your child’s next online video sensation!
