The Secret to Powerful Story-Telling That You Can Use When Speaking to 1-on-1, Group or Crowd
Today is Part 4!
I’m going to talk to you about how you can come up with great stories.
Because as I shared with you…
Story-telling is a powerful technique you should use when you’re conducting training, workshops or talks.
People tend to remember what you talk about.
And you will also notice how people will listen to you attentively.
But remember that story-telling… isn’t everything.
Because there are other factors involved that will enable you to become an effective communicator.
This is what I’ll talk to you about in the next training!
As for now… just to recap, in part 1 to 3, I talked to you about:
- How a man was able to persuade and influence in 1,600 words
- I also talked to you about how you can speak without being so nervous
- How you can be unforgettable & hold your listener’s attention
Today, let’s jump straight into coming up with great stories.
You see sometimes I come across people who struggle with sharing compelling stories.
Stories that will make an impact instead of putting people to sleep.
People ask me:
“Darren, how can I share a story that is captivating?”
There are 2 secrets that I will share with you.
The 1st secret is to use frameworks.
Frameworks are basically structures that are already proven to work.
Think of it as like a food recipe.
Instead of starting from scratch and with a blank mind, it helps to spark ideas in your mind.
Take Disney or Marvel as an example.
Why are they able to make so many successful movies on a consistent basis?
Disney has been around for 96 years! How is it possible that they are able to repeat their success again and again?
It’s because of using Frameworks.
They use proven story structures for all of their movies.
There are story structures for:
- Family movies
- Heroic movies
- Detectives and so on…
Don Bluth, American Animator for The Land Before Time Movie said:
“The only story worth telling is that of a lost child, trying to find his way home.”
This is how they repeat their success consistently.
This same principle applies to Public Speaking/Communication Skills.
It’s NOT about how talented you are.
It’s about adopting frameworks.
Following frameworks allows even non-natural speakers to become persuasive communicators.
This is what I’ve realized through my 15 years of speaking experience.
By using proven frameworks, you don’t ever need to start from scratch.
The 2nd secret is to start a story bank!
This is something that I personally practice that I’d like to share with you.
Just watch this video that I’ve recorded below and you’ll understand more:
I hope what I’ve shared with you so far will give you some sense of confidence.
In the next final training, I will share with you the factors involved that will enable you to become an effective communicator.
Apart from story-telling, they are equally important to develop yourself into a confident & influential communicator.
To Your Future,
Darren Tay
