[Part 3 of 5] Speak, Present With Confidence!

A Powerful Technique You Can Use to Be Unforgettable & Hold People’s Attention.

What’s ONE important thing to keep in mind so you’re able to speak without being so nervous?

This is something I talked about in the last training.

If you missed it, you can click here to go back to it.

In today’s training, I want to talk to you about becoming memorable.

Or how can you keep people listening to you attentively without being distracted?

This is a technique that Martin Luther King used in his speech in 1963 as well.

During the beginning of his speech, he said:

“Five score years ago (100 years ago), a great American, in whose symbolic shadow we stand signed the Emancipation Proclamation.
This momentous decree came as a great beacon light of hope to millions of Negro slaves who had been seared in the flames of withering injustice.
It came as a joyous daybreak to end the long night of captivity.

But one hundred years later, we must face the tragic fact that the Negro is still not free.
One hundred years later, the life of the Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination.
One hundred years later, the Negro lives on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity.”

By looking at what Martin Luther King said, can you make a guess about what technique is being used here?

Just to elaborate a little more…

This is a powerful technique that can be used for talking to 1-on-1 or 1-to-many.

When you start using this technique, you’re going to be very memorable.

In fact, you’ll be surprised that people will remember details of what you said.

Even days or years after listening to you, you’ll be surprised at how people will remember.

This is a technique that I personally use as well.

Whenever I have to conduct training, workshops or talks.

Instead of just sharing information, I use this.

Managed to make a guess?

Yup! Some of you might guess that it’s the power of…

Telling Stories!

Telling stories is a great way to engage and keep people listening to you attentively.

Instead of just sharing information, think of how you can turn it into a story.

Because when you do that, it becomes very memorable.

As the saying goes… “Words are how we think, stories are how we link.”

I’m pretty sure that if I ask you to recall what I was wearing when I stood on stage to deliver my winning speech for the World Champion of Public Speaking?

You’ll probably remember that it was a white underwear.

Stories work very well because we’ve been trained since young.

It also explains why many people love to watch movies or TV dramas for hours!

Netflix says its subscribers watch an average of two hours a day!

And it also explains why people love to look at their phone for hours.

Now the question is:

How can you come up with good stories?

How can you come up with interesting stories?

These stories can be your personal stories or it can always be someone else’s story.

I’ll share 2 tips that you can use in the next training (Part 4) on coming up with interesting stories.

Now one last thing…

Now although Story-Telling is powerful, it isn’t everything.

Because it’s only one of many other factors involved that will enable you to become an effective communicator.

Relying on story-telling alone is almost like riding a bicycle with only its front wheels.

This is what I’ll talk to you about in detail when we get to Part 5 of this training series.

To Your Future,
Darren Tay
