What Kids May Learn from Public Speaking
Public speaking has its benefits and these are not just for adults, but even for children. This helps a lot of building their confidence and self-esteem and also in helping them become effective communicators. This would also be instrumental in their success in different aspects of life: social, business, professional, and personal.
Public speaking for kids can be done in many ways. There are various ways to teach it and different ways in which it will be used as well. Examples of these are drama lessons that will teach the kids on how to act, mime and movement lessons that aid with self-expression, debating lessons that make way for the development of critical thinking, public speaking lessons that would enable them to deliver speeches of various sorts.
The multiple benefits that are brought about by teaching children to speak and present themselves publicly had been recognized more than a century had passed. There were great orators and statesmen who made powerful speeches in the past and it is that influence that led to making oratory part of the schools’ curriculum.
And it’s not a matter of speeches. Educators also realized the impact of public speaking in education. However, in the past, children were just asked to recite the speeches or memorize them and made to follow the teachers for them to become interesting and influential speakers. They were only given positive feedback, and negative feedback was greatly shunned.
In the recent years, it has become more visible that kids tend to be more spontaneous speakers compared to adults when they are left alone and not forced by adults. Kids when given the chance would find it easy to express themselves too. What they need is guidance and training in terms of the structure and presentation of speeches. This is what makes the debate a powerful training tool for children.
